CenturyLink Qwest Purchase (UM-1484)

The Commission is reviewing an application to clear the way for CenturyLink (formerly known as CenturyTel) to acquire Qwest Communications, which operates in 14 western states and is Oregon’s dominant traditional phone provider.

The deal, if approved by regulators, including the Oregon Public Utility Commission; is a stock-for-stock transaction that will leave CenturyLink with a 51% controlling interest. If approved, the new company will have nearly one million phone lines in Oregon.

For the Commission to approve it, the Commission must determine that the sale will not harm customers. To ensure customers are not harmed the Commission may require certain conditions. The Commission will announce its decision this fall.
