Press Advisory - Executive Session And Special Public Meeting

From press calls we’ve had today, there appears to be some confusion about the purpose of the Executive Session and Public Meeting set for tomorrow, Thursday, September 16, at 2:00 PM.
The purpose of this advisory is to clear up any confusion.
  1. Staff of the Oregon Public Utility Commission (OPUC) and U S WEST have signed a stipulation on a 1997 rate case currently awaiting action in the Oregon Court of Appeals. The agreement calls for customer credits of more than $200 million and a rate reduction of $63 million a year.
  1. The purpose of tomorrow’s meeting is not to consider that agreement.
  1. The purpose of the meeting is to allow the Commissioners to consider whether to ask the Attorney General’s office to file a motion with the Oregon Court of Appeals to hold the appeal in abeyance. If the Court of Appeals grants the motion, the Commission will then open a proceeding to consider the agreement.

Attachment: Public Meeting Notice 

The Oregon Public Utility Commission will hold an Executive Session on September 16, 1999. The purpose of the Executive Session is to consult with legal counsel concerning legal rights and duties with respect to current litigation in the Oregon Court of Appeals related to the Commission's orders in PUC Dockets UT 80 and UT 125. 


Following the Executive Session, the Commissioners will convene a Special Public Meeting to announce their decision. The Executive Session is being held pursuant to ORS 192.660(1)(h). 


The Executive Session will begin at 2:00 p.m., with a Special Public Meeting following, in the Commission Conference Room, on the 2nd Floor of the Public Utility Commission Building, 550 Capitol St., NE, Salem, Oregon. 


Pursuant to ORS 192.610(2) and 192.660(1), (3), executive sessions are closed to members of the public, except the news media.
