Workshop Planned on the Federal Broadband Plan and Its Impacts on Oregon’s Telecommunications Policies

Salem, OR. The Oregon Public Utility Commission will be hosting a workshop to examine how the Federal Broadband Plan could affect Oregon’s telecommunications policies in the future.
 
The Workshop will feature speakers from the industry and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), who will discuss The Federal Broadband Plan, Universal Service and Intercarrier Compensation Reform, and Adoption and Utilization strategies. 
 
“With so much going on at the regarding expanding access to high-speed internet, it’s crucial that we examine what Oregon needs to do to ensure that more Oregonians, especially those in areas with limited access, are not left out,” OPUC Commission Chairman Ray Baum said. 
 
Commissioner Baum also heads up the Governor’s Broadband Advisory Council and plays a key role at the national level as Chairman of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Committee on Telecommunications and Chairman of the Federal-State Joint Board on Universal Service.
 
The Conference will take place on May 4, 2010, in the Auditorium located on the Bridge Level of 2WTC, Portland, Oregon from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. 
 
The morning session will feature Carol Mattey, FCC Deputy Bureau Chief for Wireline Competition Bureau, and a panel discussion by industry experts.  The afternoon session will include a workshop on potential reforms to the Oregon Universal Service Fund, Intercarrier Compensation, and Rate Rebalancing.
