Commission Promotes National Lifeline Awareness Week - September 14-20, 2015

Salem, OR.  You or someone you know could be eligible for a discount on your landline or wireless phone bill through a program offered by the Oregon Public Utility Commission.

"We want to make sure that all eligible households in Oregon benefit from monthly savings on their phone bills," said Commissioner Stephen Bloom. "It’s extremely important Oregonians are able to connect with their family, jobs, and various emergency services. Fortunately, this program helps to do that for many low-income families.”
 
The Oregon Lifeline program provides a discount of $12.75 or less a month for landline or wireless phone service to qualifying low-income customers.  Most Oregon telephone companies offer this assistance.
 

Oregonians may qualify if they meet certain income guidelines or are receiving assistance from one of the following programs.
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; Food Stamps (SNAP)
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Medicaid
  • National School Lunch Program; Free Lunch Program Only (NSLP)
  • Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
  • Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8)
The Oregon Lifeline program currently serves about 68,000 Oregon residents.  “Although the program grew by 60 percent in 2013, there are still many eligible Oregonians who may not be aware of the program,” said Jon Cray, Oregon Lifeline Program Manager.

The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) has proclaimed the week of September 14–20, 2015, as National Telephone Discount Lifeline Awareness Week.
 
“I firmly believe that in this day and age that no one should have to go without telephone service,” Bloom added.
 
NARUC hopes the National Telephone Discount Lifeline Awareness Week will help get more consumers connected. NARUC is teaming up with the Federal Communications Commission, the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates, and eligible telecommunications carriers to enroll more low-income consumers into federal and state Lifeline programs.
