PUC OFFERS ENERGY SAVING AND COOLING TIPS FOR SUMMER
SALEM, Ore. – The Oregon Public Utility Commission (PUC) reminds Oregon residents to consider ways to conserve energy and stay cool this summer.

“With higher temperatures expected this weekend, we felt it was important to issue tips to help reduce energy consumption to remain safe and comfortable while avoiding high energy bills,” said Lisa Hardie, PUC Chair.

Energy conservation and cooling suggestions include:

·          Service central and window air conditioning units regularly; clean or replace filters often.
·          Turn off non-essential appliances and as many lights as possible.
·          Delay using appliances that produce heat, such as clothes dryers, stoves and dishwashers until after 7 p.m.
·          Use power strips to minimize plug load and unplug appliances not in use, as they continue to draw energy.
·          Use fans to increase air circulation.
·          Replace air filters monthly for maximum benefit and check air return vents to keep air paths clear.
·          Close off rooms not in use.
·          Block out direct sunlight with the use of shades, blinds or curtains.
·          Open windows to take advantage of cooler temperatures during evening hours.
·          Keep the refrigerator between 37 and 40 degrees, and the freezer at 5 degrees.
·          Set thermostat to 78 degrees when the home is occupied and 85 degrees when unoccupied. If possible, utilize a  programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature automatically.

For additional energy savings information or assistance with a utility bill, contact the PUC’s Consumer Services Division at (800) 522-2404.  To estimate current energy usage and receive customized recommendations for improvement, take part in a free online Home Energy Review from Energy Trust at www.energytrust.org/start.
