Near-Term Electric Power Supply Power Outlook

Salem, OR - The electricity supply outlook for the next few years, and who will build new generation in the future, will be the topics of a joint Oregon Public Utility Commission/Oregon Office of Energy special public meeting Wednesday morning.
The meeting was prompted by completion of a Northwest Power Planning Council staff study that concluded over the next few years, without new resources, the probability of being unable to fully serve load during the winter months could reach as high as 24 percent in 2003.
Staff from NWPPC and the Northwest Power Pool will summarize their recent supply outlook studies and the Bonneville Power Administration will present an overview of transmission system availability and reliability. The two major utilities in the state, Portland General Electric and PacifiCorp will cover their near-term plans and supply risks.
In addition, the Commission and the Office of Energy will hear from industrial customers and independent power producers about the changing electricity market and its effect on decisions to build new resources.
