Salem, OR – The Oregon Public Utility Commission and its Portfolio Advisory Committee have received a Green Power Leadership Award for helping to design one of the fastest growing green power programs in the United States and for setting an example for regulatory agencies throughout the country.
The award is part of a recognition program of the Green Power Partnership, a new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) voluntary program developed to build demand for green power.
Portfolio Advisory Committee members formally presented the award to the Commission today.
Commission Chairman Roy Hemmingway said, "While the current commissioners are strongly in favor of green power, the real work was done by the previous Commission members and the advisory committee who deserve the credit for this award."
The Oregon Public Utility Commission (OPUC) and its Portfolio Advisory Committee (PAC) worked with PacifiCorp and Portland General Electric and other important stakeholders like the Renewable Northwest Project (RNP) to design the green pricing program. What makes the program unique is that the implementation is a joint marketing effort between the utilities and a third-party green marketer, in this case Green Mountain Energy Company.
The portfolio options are included in Oregon’s 1999 Electric Industry Restructuring law.
Oregon's unique approach offers consumers three meaningful renewable energy choices at competitive prices and reduces transaction costs for all participants.
As of October, 17,615 PGE customers were participating in the portfolio options out of a total of 724,000 eligible customers. At PacifiCorp, 13,687 customers had enrolled by the end of October, out of 486,000 eligible customers.
